Fully Baked (The Marijuana Quagmire)
Posted by Jake Schuman
Cannabis was one of the first crops ever cultivated by man. It has been used by humans as rope (boring), a food ingredient (boring), medicine (boring), and recreational drug (groovy dude!). The most widely used drug in the world, cannabis is now illegal in most countries. In the United States, 734,000 people were arrested for marijuana-related offenses in the year 2000. Though it is a simple weed and its history has been entwined (pun intended) with that of man since before recorded history, modern scientists are still uncertain as to how the drug operates, and today’s politicians are still unsure as to what to do in regards to this bothersome plant. In honor of Rhode Island recently legalizing medical marijuana, I propose that we go back to the basics, and examine the fundamentals of the world’s second-most controversial weed (after the dandelion, which I always found pretty…). Perhaps we will find some answers that will help us solve the apparent marijuana quagmire.

EDITORIAL: Marijuana As Medicine
Jun. 10--The Supreme Court has ruled that the federal government is fully within its rights to override state laws and prosecute patients who use marijuana for medical purposes. The question now is: Why does it bother?
Once upon a time, the idea of smoking pot to treat an illness may have sounded like something out of a Cheech and Chong movie. But no one is laughing anymore. Over the last two decades, a growing body of evidence has vindicated the value of cannabis for a variety of serious conditions, with minimal risk.

GANJA - Is it harmful or useful?
EULALEE THOMPSON
CONTROVERSY OR not, local scientists, Dr. Henry Lowe and Professor Errol Morrison note in their book the History of the use of Marijuana that ganja is liberally used by the folk in soups, cakes and cookies. The leaves are brewed and the tea taken as tonic or crushed and applied as an ointment to cure various conditions. In common folk preparations, the green leaves or buds are soaked in white rum (sometimes tempered with fruit juice) and used for the relief of stomach ache, toothache and symptoms of asthma.

Pot Possession Age Limit Reviewed In Canada
(Angus Reid Consultants - CPOD Global Scan) – Many Canadians believe only adults should be allowed to handle cannabis, according to a poll by SES Research. 77.6 per cent of respondents believe the minimum age to possess marijuana should be 18 years.
In November 2004, the federal government re-introduced a controversial bill that seeks "alternate penalty frameworks" for the possession of small amounts of marijuana. If the bill passes, any person caught with 15 grams of the drug or less would face fines instead of criminal charges.
